How to use the SOCKS proxy in the Olfeo solution.

Background

SOCKS is a network protocol that allows client-server applications to transparently use proxy services. Support for the protocol in client applications is essential in order to use this type of proxy.

Most applications allow you to choose which SOCKS proxy version to use:

  • either SOCKS4,
  • or SOCKS5, which extends the previous version by adding the ability to transmitUDP, enables authentication, domain name resolution by the SOCKS server itself, and IPv6.

SOCKS5 is generally the recommended choice.

Steps

Configuring your Olfeo solution

  1. From the webadmin interface > Proxy Cache QoS > SOCKS > Configuration
  2. Click the (+) button to add a new proxy
  3. Create a [label] named SOCKS Tunnel, specify [port] 8080, and confirm.

Example configuration of a Firefox client browser

Preferences > Advanced > Network. In the Connection section (Configure how Firefox connects to the Internet), click Settings:

In the window that opens, check Manual proxy configuration, then enter the proxy IP address and port in the corresponding SOCKS field.

Google Chrome settings

  • Windows :

    Settings > Show advanced settings... (at the bottom) > in Network > Change proxy settings...> Connections tab > Network settings > check the Use a proxy server (...) box. > Advanced > enter the proxy IP address and port in the corresponding SOCKS field.

  • Mac OS X :

    Preferences...> Show advanced settings...(at the bottom) > in Network > Change proxy settings...> Proxies tab > choose SOCKS proxy. Fill in the fields with the IP address and port of the SOCKS proxy.
