Web security: guaranteeing legal and cultural compliance

Positive security is reflected in Olfeo's ability to ensure that your web traffic complies with the legal and cultural context of your country

Internet access control: legal compliance

Many legal issues are involved with regard to the use of the Internet in the workplace and you need to be aware of their implications.

These issues fall under 3 main categories:

  • Criminal and civil risk
  • Labour laws
  • Private data protection

Criminal and civil risk

Many websites are illegal according various laws either due to their content (e.g. child pornography, promotion of terrorism, etc.) or the products and services that they offer (illegal gambling, drugs, etc.). When users access such sites, criminal or civil liability usually falls not on their shoulders, but on the company, and potentially, on corporate officers and even the CSO for negligence on their part. Blocking such websites must therefore be your top priority.

Since every country has its own particular legislation, Olfeo has chosen to team up with 5 international law firms to define, with utmost precision, legal and illegal perimeters, and to ensure that they are closely monitored.

We have therefore built sets of categories for several countries based on applicable legislation. Olfeo's web security gateway takes into account your country's entire legal and illegal perimeter in its URL databases, which then allow filtering your employees' web access in compliance with legislation.

Labour laws

The regulation of Internet traffic must be carried out with full regard for labour laws. In most countries, it is mandatory for companies to make employees acknowledge and accept the conditions of use for Internet access through a document called an IT charter. In order for it to be applicable and enforceable, it must be circulated following several criteria.

Olfeo offers a feature dedicated to the distribution of the IT charter. And because logs are kept on users' acknowledgments of receipt, you can protect yourself from potential misuse and stay in charge with regard to the challenges of workplace productivity.

Personal data protection

In many countries, the retention of personalised logs - in which a user can be unambiguously identified - is mandatory. Access to such logs must only be granted following stringent legal requirements. Olfeo offers functional coverage that enables the modular definition of access conditions, particularly through the restriction of administration privileges.

Web content filtering: cultural compliance

Categories adapted to what your employees are interested in

Apart from legal protection, the administrator of a filtering solution is faced with the need to define the Internet access policy within the product according to the instructions of various actors in the organisation: HR, the legal department, staff representatives, etc. Olfeo has built sets of specific categories that meet your employees' usage requirements. The categories offered make it possible to effortlessly define access policies in order to ensure proper regulation.

Unrivalled content recognition accuracy exceeding 98 %

There are more than a billion web pages worldwide. Any given filtering tool can only recognise some of them, so judging its quality by the size of its database is misleading. The right criterion to look out for is its recognition accuracy, which is defined as the percentage of websites requested by users that the database effectively recognises. Backed by 15 years of experience, Olfeo has all-round knowledge of surfing habits, thereby offering unrivalled recognition accuracy in Europe exceeding 98%!

Granular content analysis

Olfeo is capable of analysing content with spectacular granularity. Content recognition extends not only to domains, but to sub-domains, URLs and IP addresses as well. So in the case of hosting websites, each sub-domain - instead of the hosting website itself - will be classified.

Self-learning database

Olfeo's solution provides a self-learning function that enables continuous improvement. This feature, which can be enabled and disabled at any time, makes it possible to automatically report to Olfeo's classification specialists any websites that may not have been recognised the first time. Such content, prioritised by level of danger and frequency, is quickly classified.  This method allows us to push the recognition accuracy rate higher and higher.

Manual categorisation of websites...

When content is unexpectedly blocked due to classification errors, the impression left on users and administrators is very seldom positive. Ever since it came into being, Olfeo has opted for manual classification to guarantee maximum quality. With automatic classification using keywords and artificial intelligence, too many errors are almost always generated, making it incompatible with the level of stringency required. Even though we use such technologies to pre-classify websites, they are subsequently verified by human eyes.

To illustrate the importance of manual classification, Olfeo is the most widespread solution in the healthcare sector as it is the trickiest sector for vendors of filtering solutions. This is no small feat considering that medical websites sometimes use vocabulary closely resembling what is used on pornographic websites.

...by European specialists

Classifying a website involves drawing conclusions about content based on a cultural reference. The same website may not be classified in the same category depending on the cultural identity of the person evaluating it. There is therefore the risk of over-blocking due to the cultural differences between the person who classified the website and the employee being filtered. The majority of Olfeo's classification specialists are culturally European and use the same references that your employees do, ensuring a guarantee of quality.

Illustration: many American solutions classify the websites of European trade unions under the categories of terrorism and activism, as this is true to their vision of what these websites represent. The consequences  of visiting such websites can be as grave as accusations of obstruction.

Guaranteeing cultural compliance while filtering web content is  another form of positive security
